Laura Madison, a sophomore at MC who attended the conference said, "I really think that in reference to moving forward into a more digital age everyone at the conference stressed the importance of being well rounded. Before I may have wanted to consider myself a specifically fashion editorial writer for a magazine; they are stressing instead that you must also understand html, visual media, etc." With the magazine industry being so highly competitive, especially in times of economic recession, the panelists enforced that a high level of comfort with digital media (such as blogs) is necessary to even be considered a contender for an internship. Dr. Trager-Bohley also said "I think that all of the conference speakers stressed the importance of flexibility. Today's journalists must be open to change, and they must be comfortable communicating across media platforms."
As well as gaining an inside look into a modern career in magazines, the conference also provided an opportunity for a "meet and greet" with human resource employees of some top New York magazines, such as Time Out magazine among others. This provided a great chance for students to hand out their resumes, and was an excellent stepping stone to get a foot in the door. So thank you to the Manhattan College Communications Department for providing such a wonderful opportunity on an early Friday morning.
