Volleyball Finishes in Fourth Place at MAAC Championships

The Lady Jaspers were swept by Marist College on November 12, 2006 forcing another face off between the two teams at the MAAC Championships during a quarterfinal match at the MAAC Volleyball Championships.
The team was ranked fourth in the ten-team MAAC tournament, beating Marist College on November 16, 2006. The tables turned for this quarterfinal match, as the Lady Jaspers swept the Red Foxes 30-24, 30-19, and 30-21.
The Lady Jaspers were yearning for another MAAC title and proved it during this match. Many phenomenal players helped capture this win over Marist College. Co-Captain Whitney Judkins had a fantastic performance hitting .652 and earning 16 kills. Meghan Plunkett, fellow co-captain of the Lady Jaspers, created four kills, nine digs, and three blocks.
Entering the third game ahead by two wins, the Red Foxes did not make the third game easy for them. A kill by Sally Hanson, of Marist College helped pull the Red Foxes ahead 19-17. Plunkett returned with a kill, which created a 9-0 run for Manhattan, securing the third game and the match.
The win over Marist College sent the Lady Jaspers to play number one seed Fairfield University on Friday November 17, 2006 in the semi-finals. Unfortunately, the Lady Jaspers fell to Fairfield University in three games (30-19, 30-22, 30-13). Fairfield quickly took control of game one and never looked back.
Rita Welsh finished with a team high of 10 kills for Manhattan College and Ashley Watson, a two-time MAAC Defensive Player of the Week during the 2006 season, led with 21 digs. Sherryta Stokes, who earned All-MAAC Second Team honors, had 11 digs and seven kills.
This win secured a spot for Fairfield University to compete in the MAAC Tournament Final on November 18, 2006. The Lady Jaspers would play a consolation match for third place on November 18, 2006.
The consolation match against Canisius College ended the Lady Jasper's hopes in earning a third place trophy at the MAAC Tournament. Stokes played another outstanding game with 12 kills and eight digs. Rita Welsh and Whitney Judkins both reached double figures in kills with 13 and 11.
The Lady Jaspers did not hold up to Canisius in hitting percentage. The Jaspers hit .130 compared to Canisius' .224 hitting percentage.
Judkins had the highest hitting percentage on the team during the 2006 campaign. She also added six digs, and two blocks in her final match on the Manhattan College Volleyball Team. Judkins' co-captain Meghan Plunkett, had a recorded nine kills, and seven digs to close out her college career.
Although these two girls just experienced their final volleyball game at Manhattan College, they were both fortunate enough to have the opportunity to play at the MAAC Tournament during their final year, as well as reaching the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history during the 2003 season. The Lady Jaspers finished the season at 13-21 overall.
