Consistency is Necessary for Lady Jasper Success

Steven Corvino

Issue date: 11/1/06 Section: Sports
For the last couple of seasons the Lady Jaspers have been in a rebuilding mode. Last year, the Lady Jaspers ended the season with an 11-18 overall record. However, the record does not prove how well they truly played. The Lady Jaspers played tough in all their games, and lost six games that were within five points.

The Lady Jaspers were led last year by a very aggressive and smart defense. They ended the season allowing their opponents only 60 points per game and a 40% field goal percentage, second in the MAAC division.

However, where the Lady Jaspers struggled was on the offensive side. They only averaged 59 points per game and 17 turnovers a game. In order to take a step forward, the Lady Jaspers must correct their offensive woes.

This year, the Lady Jaspers will depend on a balance attack for their offensive surge. Junior guard Joann Nwafili was named Second Team pre-season All-MAAC, and was one of the teams leading scorers last year.

Secondly, if the defense can play to the caliber they played last year, and the Lady Jaspers are able to get a balanced offensive production, they could give Marist College and Iona College some young, new blood in the MAAC division. That is a lot of ifs, but Coach Hill is optimistic. "This is an exciting year and I'm looking forward to it. We have a great group, they work hard, and have a great attitude to get better."

The Lady Jaspers have had three straight losing seasons after winning the 2003 MAAC division title. Nevertheless, Jasper fans could be witnessing a start of a string of many successful seasons with this young core of players, and a determined coach hungry to win.
