Home Sweet Home; No Brotherly Love for Owens in His Return

Issue date: 10/11/06 Section: Sports
They booed Santa Clause, they cheered when Michael Irvin broke his back, and they threw batteries at J.D. Drew. So it was not a surprise the Philadelphia fans booed Terrell Owens last Sunday when he made his return.

After months of anticipation and a week filled with nauseating hype, it was finally time for T.O.'s homecoming. The Super Bowl might not get this much attention.

The hype surrounded Terrell Owens, but the Eagles stole the spotlight. T.O. was shut down for most of the day, as the Eagles hung on to beat the Cowboys 38-24 in a thrilling finish.

Owens, who was held without a catch in the first half, ended the game with only three receptions and 45 yards receiving. He was outdone by the Eagles' young receivers and his old friend, Donovan McNabb.

However, the play of the day belonged to Lito Sheppard. He returned an interception for 102 yards in the final minute to seal the Eagles' 38-24 victory over the Dallas Cowboys. From the Eagles 6, Sheppard stepped in front of Bledsoe's pass and raced the other way to seal the game for the Eagles.

Terrell Owens had a bizarre career with the Philadelphia Eagles. In the 2004 off-season, the San Francisco 49ers, Owens first team, traded Owens to the Baltimore Ravens for a draft pick. However, his stint with the Ravens would not last long.

Owens and his agent appealed to the NFL players union on the trade. Owens declared he wanted to play in Phili with his friend, Donovan McNabb. Some how, Owens won the appeal, and Owens was trade from the Ravens to the Eagles for a second round pick. It was a very confusing turn of events, but in the end, the three teams involved, the 49ers, Ravens, and Eagles, received compensation.

Owens would end up where he wanted in the controversial three-way trade. Many fans thought this was the missing piece in the puzzle for the Eagles. It made them instant Super Bowl contenders, and the missing link for McNabb. However, the marriage would not last long.
