The women's soccer team lost to rival Fordham University, by a score of 3-0 this past Friday. The team hasn't given up three goals all year and has yet to be shutout until the loss. Ironically, their worst game of the year came against their cross-town rival.
The Jaspers had two shots all game, none of which were on the goal. Fordham's goalie, Allie Cacciotti, didn't have to make a save. The Jaspers were averaging close to three goals a game but were shutout for the first time. "The effort was there, but we just didn't play up to our ability," said freshman forward, Amanda McCormick.
The night was chilly with a cool breeze, signifying the way the game was for the Jaspers. "Fordham played well. We didn't take advantage of our opportunities," said Head Coach, Sean Driscoll. "They deserved to win."
Manhattan looked good at the start. For the first 15 minutes they looked like the Jaspers that were 7-1, setting school records left and right. Those 15 minutes were all the Jaspers had as Katie Sanchez scored her fifth goal of the season to give the Rams a 1-0 lead. Two minutes later Erica Frizzell scored her first goal of the season, and in the second half, Leah Jerome scored from five yards out to give the Rams their eventual 3-0 lead.
"It stinks that we lost, but we're still 7-2 and the MAAC games are coming up, which is all that matters to us right now," said Sophomore midfielder, Samantha Stahl.
Sophomore defender, Brittany Duhamel, added, "It was our biggest non-conference rival, and it would have been great to win going into MAAC play. Not only would we have had the best record in school's history, but the bragging rights of being the best in the Bronx."
The school does not have those bragging rights for now. They won last year, 2-0, but the recent win gives Fordham an 8-5 advantage over Manhattan in their 13 meetings.
"We have young players, and a very good group of girls," said Driscoll. The team seems to have a bright future. Five of the top seven points leaders on the team are freshmen.
Their next game is on Sept. 29 and is the start of MAAC games against Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y.
