Monday April 10 was dedicated to the top country music stars, when CMT aired its annual award show. While many of the award shows, such as the Grammy's, have awards devoted to country music performers, the CMT Music Awards are the only ones that set aside a whole night to honor only them.
While many of the other awards are important to the stars, many feel that these awards are more valuable, because the CMT Music Awards are the only fan-voted awards. Fans are able to vote by logging on to CMT.com and picking their favorite videos and artists. In the first round of voting, fans can pick the star they love the most and the top four are tallied and voted for again in the final round.
The award show, which has only existed since 2002, delivered a huge show to thank fans for their continued support of the members of the country music scene. Comedian Jeff Foxworthy returned as host for the awards, and big named stars such as Toby Keith, Kenny Chesney, Rascal Flatts, and Gretchen Wilson all performed during the broadcast.
The show, which took place at The Curb Event Center at Belmont University in Nashville, provided a few surprises for its devoted fans. Host Foxworthy danced along side Dancing with the Stars' Lisa Rinna to open the show, which not only shocked the audience, but it also made them laugh.
Many fans were also happy to hear that Carrie Underwood, who was last season's winner of the FOX show American Idol, won two awards for her hit single "Jesus, Take the Wheel." Underwood's Idol win definitely helped her career, allowing her debut album, Some Hearts, which was released in November, to be certified triple platinum. For her first win for Breakthrough Video of the Year, Underwood nervously said "This is my very first acceptance speech, so I made a list. First of all, thank you fans so much for voting for me again. You have no idea what it means to me." She also received the award for Female Video of the Year and appeared later in the evening to perform her award winning song.
