When the Militia record company got hold of The Rocket Summer, they signed Avary to their label after Calendar Days and helped produce his first full-length album. He fondly recalls, "It was exciting just to know it was a label that was just starting out and a band that was just starting out...I felt like we were in similar situations."
Avary grew up listening to indie pop bands like Superchunk and Built to Spill and now he loves all types of music. However, he does not necessarily think The Rocket Summer sounds like the bands he mentioned. As far as his writing process, he says, "I just think it was something already inside of me, what I was meant to write because it happened easily." Avary also listened to bands like Jimmy Eat World, who actually asked him to play with them last year. At the time, he didn't even have a band and threw one together four days before the show, and said it was an amazing experience.
Not many 23-year-olds can say they have accomplished everything that Avary has. He has toured the world, he has made two albums and an EP, but he always knew this was going to happen for him. After this tour, The Rocket Summer is doing a headlining tour and then taking some time off to make the new album. This is bittersweet but Avary knows he wants to make another album so it is another venture for him. Even though fans will be sad to know that this is their last tour for a while, it is safe to say the new album will be worth the wait.
The Rocket Summer is a breath of fresh air. No two songs sound the same and each is cleverly composed of catchy melodies. Avary's music does not sound like any other band out there right now and he has not compromised any of his beliefs or feelings to make the music he does.
At the end of the show, Avary yells out to the crowd, "I love you all to death!"
Bryce Avary, we feel the same way.
