Dr. Skelly Speaks About His Iraq Experience

Jenny Erasmus

Issue date: 4/5/06 Section: News
Dr. Skelly is especially pleased with the accomplishments he made at the Teaching Institute for Women, as well as the Arabic Book Program, which distributed English books translated into Arabic to schools and local libraries. Dr. Skelly was equally proud of U.S. students who raised twenty-four million dollars for Iraqi colleges during the time he was in Baquba. With this donation an English language lab and chemistry lab with state of the art equipment were installed at Yarmouk University. The advantage that this addition will have to Iraqi students is outstanding.

Dr. Skelly's speech was refreshing, compassionate and relevant to our news today. When the news today about the war in Iraq is consistently negative, it was a pleasure for high school students to hear of substantial progress that is being made. During his speech he read letters he had received from Iraqi professors, thanking him for all he had done. He stressed that America as a nation is responsible for the remarkable achievements he was a part of in Iraq. Dr. Skelly explained that through reconstruction and education peace can be accomplished.
