The Lady J's seemed to be right on top in the first game of the MAAC Championships on March 2. The team was fierce as they faced Rider in the tournament. Despite the tough season, the Lady Jaspers have held their heads up high never giving up. They embodied the true meaning of what it means to be a team and whether they won or lost, they knew that they gave it their all.
As stated on gojaspers.com, in five years the Lady J's have entered the MAAC Tournament winning the first game each time. The Lady Jaspers continued that tradition, so to speak, as they defeated Rider in the first game of the tournament with a score of 89-52.
Freshmen Kelly Regan and Kymesha Alston were at the top of their game against Rider as they both scored double figures having a major impact in the results on the scoreboard. In fact, Regan was able to match her 17-point career high. Sophomore Caitlin Flood who has done very well this 2005-2006 season, quickly realized that Regan was open and passed her the ball contributing to Regan's career high.
Alston also enjoyed the spotlight against Rider with an exceptional contribution of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Teamwork was definitely working to their favor and the Lady Jaspers were keeping up the pace.
Another Lady Jasper who was definitely spicing up the game and was named 2006 All-MAAC Third Team was sophomore Joann Nwafili who has also done very well this season and contributed 16 points in the first MAAC game.
The first game of the season was definitely a great one for the Lady Jaspers. A tough game awaited them, however, in their second game in the MAAC Tournament.
As the Lady Jaspers faced Loyola on 3 March they realized luck was not on their side and scoring points would not come quite as easily this time. The Lady J's who played well both offensively and defensively in the first game against Rider had some major problems offensively against Loyola costing them a shot at the title.
They were not alone offensively as Loyola proved to have the same problem at the start of the game. With defense on the side of both teams, fans wondered who would be the one to fall first. Although the Lady J's tried to contribute additional points to the scoreboard, luck was just not on their side.
With all the points contributed, including Nwafili's eight points and nine rebounds, the Lady Jaspers' stint at the MAAC Championships was put to the end as Loyola continued in the tournament with a 66-57 victory.
Despite the lost, the Jaspers portrayed good sportsmanship and proved to everyone that teamwork can get you very far. As the season has ended for the Lady Jaspers, they should walk off the court knowing that they gave it their all this season. One could only expect the same for the 2006-2007 season.
