The season opener for Kevin Leighton resulted in his first win as the Jasper head coach and marked the first time in over 20 years the Jaspers defeated a ranked opponent. Senior captain and number one starter Chris Cody helped the Jaspers as he held the Green Waive scoreless.
Cody pulled out all the stops as he got himself in and out of a lot of jams as he stranded 14 runners on base. He walked an unusual four batters, but he balanced out the walks by striking out 10 guys. The senior pitched a complete game shutout, which helped out the Jaspers a lot because of the non-use of the bullpen.
Despite the Jaspers only having three hits, right fielder Nunzio Franzese and left fielder Mike Garcia were able to get two of the Jaspers three hits in the 3rd inning. Franzese led off the inning with a single, and eventually advanced to third on a groundout by Eric Nieto. That brought up Garcia with a runner in scoring position and he didn't disappoint. He ripped a double to left center scoring Franzese and the only run of the game. Third baseman Dom Lombardi contributed with the Jaspers third hit.
The Green Waive knocked Cody around a little bit putting up 10 hits but unfortunately couldn't him. Center fielder Southard led Tulane as he went 3-5 at the plate, but left four guys on base. Short stop Everett also had a good game as he went 2-4 at the dish. Tulane's RBI machine couldn't get past Cody as he ended up leaving seven runners on base in five at bats. All of this mastery by Cody led to a 1-0 victory for the Jaspers.
Saturday afternoon brought another match-up against these two teams and another chance for the Jaspers to beat a nationally ranked team.
Joe Culen started the game for the Jaspers and pitched a good game, as he went four innings and only giving up two hits and one run. The statistic that hurt Culen was the five walks causing him to throw a couple too many pitches.
Catcher Nick Derba had an excellent game, going 2-4 at the plate and knocking in all three runs for the Jaspers. Unfortunately, Derba also left four runners on base in his four at bats. Sophomore first baseman Matt Rizzotti helped out as he added with three hits in five at bats.
All of Tulane's players pitched in to defeat the Jaspers on this Saturday afternoon as four different guys knocked in runs; including short stop Everett, second baseman Emaus, left fielder Riser and Scelfo who pinch hit for catch Kwan.
Matt Nevins came in to relieve in the seventh inning to hold Tulane at three runs but he was unsuccessful. Everett and Emaus came through with runners in scoring position and pushed across 2 runs to defeat the Jaspers 5-3 in the second game of the three game series. Nevins was charged with the loss and relief pitcher Latham got the victory for the Green Waive.
The series will be finished on Sunday March 5, 2006, as the Jaspers will try to take two out of three from the Green Waive.
