Jonas Bronck Academy, the middle school housed in the lower levels of Hayden Hall, put their passion and dedication on display Thursday in their celebration of reopening as MS 228.

While many Manhattan College students may not be aware of the school's location, the students and faculty definitely notice the hard work and effort by the Manhattan College community. They have taken the opportunities given to them and truly excelled in both education and community.

Respect, dignity, and integrity are the goals of JBA. Seventh grader Jesus Garcia and eighth grader Wilgrid Peralta were two of many tour guides directing visitors through the shows held in several classrooms to exemplify these goals during the rebirth ceremony.

Giving a slideshow presentation teaching the history of JBA, a newscast describing the many clubs and their duties at the school, and several other activities, the children's' efforts shone through.

"Every child has the right to an education," said Maria Esponda, Principal of M.S. 228 in her welcoming address. Ms. Esponda gave a heartfelt speech recalling the journey that was made by the community to get where they are today. She then turned the stage over to her guest speakers, including Manhattan College Provost Dr. Weldon Jackson.

"Greatness takes a community," explained Jackson. He went on to say that, "to know Manhattan College played a part, it's very satisfying."

Manhattan College has opened up many of its science and engineering laboratories to the students of JBA, which has allowed the students opportunities to engage in programs that may be too complicated without in-depth lab research.

In his speech, Jackson told of an eighth grade student who already knew she wanted to be a forensic scientist. She explained that she wanted to go to the Bronx High School of Science if she got in. Dr. Jackson interrupted her and explained that, "it's not if you don't, it's when you do." That message has been picked up by the JBA community.
