When the stage lights are finally dimmed at 9:00 PM, the breezy, summer wind grabs the loud, chanting voices. Age is but a number among this group. Dressed in shirts that scream out their devotion, glow-in-the-dark sticks wave all around PNC Bank Arts Center, as the audience welcomes the return of a former teen sensation: The Backstreet Boys.

Just at the mention of this group's name, many make faces or snicker. It seems that since their debut back in 1992, Backstreet has had to face much scrutiny. Even though the Fab Five has sold millions of records all over the world and overcame many obstacles, it seems that the general population is hesitant about giving this group another chance.

The Backstreet Boys' music evolved from love-sick, teenybopper songs to a more serious and mature sound. Like their changing lives, their lyrics became more personal over the years. Their last two albums, Millennium and Black and Blue, proved that the each of the Boys was going through a different aspect of life. Over ten years of friendship and constant company, there came the day when everyone was expecting, the end of the Backstreet Boys. Although the boys reportedly promised to return with a new CD, fans and critic alike were unsure about the boys' future.

Since the release of Never Gone back on June 14th, many long-time fans and recent BSB enthusiasts seem to be celebrating the more "grown-up" sound and lyrics of this group after a five year absence. The concert proved that the boys cannot be denied of their talents. Kicking up the night with some of the old hits like Larger Then Life and The Call. The truth behind their success in the past is their ability to sing. They have the ability to send shivers up the spines of those listening while singing a capella has been absolutely undeniable.

Their recent success, however, can be identified with the fact that even with the considerable gap, the quintet was able to capture the attention of a much larger group. From the front row seats to the far away land of lawn seats, fans of all ages littered the theater. This concert was considerably different from their other ones. This one had three drastic points worth mentioning.

The first difference was obvious right from the start. Although the Boys worked the stage with their undeniable smooth moves and kept the audience on their feet, it was all done without back up dancers. In past tours, back-up dancers were a large part of the show. This time around, the Backstreet Boys seemed to be all over the stage as they captivatingly moved about. What was more was that a sense of great friendship and general enjoyment was displayed among the boys themselves as they performed.
