Essentially, television has become an escape for countless Americans. Yes, we all need something to help us relax, but for many, it is easy to get lost in the fantasy, and forget or even simply ignore, the real issues at hand. In a time when there is so much turmoil across the world, the one issue that most Americans seem to be concerned with is-gasp-Brad and Jen's breakup. Sure, many may feel as though they know them, but we're forgetting that they are, in fact, total strangers. Certainly this must be a very difficult time for the couple, and perhaps sympathy is appropriate, but constant layouts documenting the "downfall" of their marriage seems to be quite excessive. It is rare when we stop to think about how all of the photographs and analysis all over US Weekly, Entertainment Tonight, and People Magazine could be hurtful. Going through a divorce, or any sort of personal issue, is a difficult process, and surely seeing headlines about it must only magnify the sting. While some may say, "Well, they're a celebrity! They asked for it!" we mustn't forget that celebrity or not, they are still people, and it is unfair to everyone involved to use their lives to drown your own sorrows or insecurities.
Ultimately, we must all learn to look beyond TV Guide and the tabloids. The world is a busy, fascinating place, and so many beautiful things, people, places, or events go totally unnoticed by a society that can't seem to let go of the fantasy to find that the real world, even with all of its problems, is where we will all find the most happiness and fulfillment.
